18 inch sparklers - the right length for weddings, exits and photography

60 to 100 seconds of burn time - long enough for every guest to light and hold before the first one burns out

18 inches is the most popular sparkler length for weddings and it is popular for a very specific reason: burn time. A standard 10 inch sparkler burns for around 30 to 40 seconds. An 18 inch sparkler burns for 60 to 100 seconds - long enough for all guests at a wedding exit to chain-light from one another, hold their sparkler aloft and still be burning when the couple walks through. That extra burn time is the difference between a photography moment and a photography disaster.

Our 18 inch sparkler range includes individual packs and bulk bundles for small gatherings through to large weddings and events. Gold sparklers are the most popular choice - they photograph beautifully and produce less smoke than coloured varieties, keeping guests comfortable and images clean. All products are available for home delivery or click and collect from our retail outlets.

Why 18 inches is the right length

  • 60 to 100 seconds burn time - twice as long as a 10 inch sparkler
  • Long enough for all guests to chain-light simultaneously before the first burns out
  • Gives photographers multiple shots across the full tunnel moment
  • Gold sparklers photograph better than coloured - cleaner light, less smoke
  • Comfortable handle length - guests hold the wire, not near the burning end
  • Suitable for all outdoor occasions - weddings, Bonfire Night, New Year's Eve

How many sparklers do you need?

Buy one sparkler per guest, plus 10 to 20 percent extra. The overage covers sparklers that fail to light, guests who want a second one or any that get dropped. For a wedding exit tunnel with guests lining both sides of the path, one per guest is the standard.

  • 30 guests - buy a pack of 36 minimum
  • 50 guests - buy 60 sparklers across packs
  • 80 guests - buy at least 96, ideally 100
  • 100 guests - buy 120 sparklers minimum
  • 150+ guests - bulk bundles give the best per-sparkler price

18 inch sparkler safety at events

At a wedding or large event, the wire stays dangerously hot for several minutes after the sparkler burns out. Always have a dedicated bucket of water at the end of the exit tunnel for guests to drop spent wires into immediately - never put them on the ground, a table or hand them back. Designate one or two people specifically responsible for the bucket and for directing guests toward it.

Light sparklers using the chain method: have one or two people at the start of each line with a portfire or long lighter. Light the first sparkler on each side, then have guests touch the tip of their unlit sparkler to the burning end of the one already lit - chain-lighting is the only practical way to light 50 to 100 sparklers quickly enough for everyone to be burning before the couple walks through. Never try to light large numbers individually from a lighter - it takes too long and the first guests will have burned out before the last ones are lit.

18 inch sparklers - your questions answered

18 inch sparklers burn for approximately 60 to 100 seconds depending on the specific product. This is roughly twice the burn time of a standard 10 inch sparkler, which burns for around 30 to 40 seconds. The longer burn time is the reason 18 inch sparklers are the most popular choice for wedding exits - all guests can chain-light and still be burning when the couple walks through the tunnel, with enough time remaining for the photographer to take multiple shots.

Buy one per guest, plus 10 to 20 percent extra to cover any that fail to light, guests who drop theirs or want a second one. For a wedding with 80 guests lining both sides of an exit path, you need at least 80 sparklers, and ideally 96 to 100. Buying slightly more than you need costs very little and avoids the disappointment of the last few guests being left without one for the moment.

Gold sparklers are strongly recommended for weddings. Gold produces a warm, classic shower of sparks that photographs beautifully in both natural and flash photography, creates significantly less smoke than coloured varieties and is more comfortable for guests standing close together. Coloured sparklers can produce vivid effects but the additional smoke they generate makes them less suitable for a tunnel exit where guests are standing in close proximity. For any occasion where photography matters, choose gold.

Use the chain-lighting method. Have one or two people with a portfire start at the front of each line and light the first sparkler on each side. Then guests touch the tip of their unlit sparkler to the burning end of the lit one beside them - the chain moves down the line in seconds. This is the only practical way to light 50 to 100 sparklers fast enough that the first guests are still burning when the last ones are lit. Never attempt to light large quantities individually from a lighter or match.

No. 18 inch outdoor sparklers must only be used outside. They produce heat, sparks and smoke that are not suitable for an enclosed space. For indoor celebrations - cake presentations, restaurant birthdays or indoor venue moments - our ice fountains are specifically designed for indoor use and produce cold sparks safely in enclosed spaces. Never use outdoor sparklers of any size indoors, regardless of how briefly.

Our minimum order for home delivery is £99 including VAT.
