Roman candle fireworks - a classic with a paced rhythm all of their own

Single tubes and multi-tube candle batteries firing coloured stars, comets and effects one at a time into the sky

Roman candles are one of the oldest and most recognisable types of firework. Each tube fires a sequence of coloured stars, comets or crackling effects one at a time, with a brief pause between each shot. That measured, deliberate rhythm sets them apart from cakes and barrages - rather than rapid-fire bursts, Roman candles add a different pace and dimension to any display.

Our range runs from small single-tube candles perfect for filling gaps in a display to large multi-tube candle batteries delivering 50 to 200 or more shots in sequence, firing effects to over 70 feet. Whether you are building variety into a larger show or looking for a quieter, more graceful firework, Roman candles are a reliable and versatile choice for gardens and events of all sizes.

Single tube candles vs candle batteries

Single tube Roman candles typically fire 5 to 10 shots in sequence, one at a time. They are small, affordable and ideal for adding variety between larger fireworks or creating a quieter moment in a display.

Candle batteries group multiple tubes together with internal fusing, firing each tube in turn to produce a longer-running, higher shot count sequence - often 50 to 200 or more shots from a single ignition. They sit alongside cakes in terms of scale but deliver a distinctly different, more measured effect. Both types must be staked into the ground and never held in the hand.

How to use Roman candles in your display

Roman candles work brilliantly as gap fillers between larger cakes and rockets, keeping the sky active without overpowering the display. Place several in a row and light them in sequence for a ripple effect that no cake can replicate. They pair naturally with fountains for ground-level colour, and with rockets for height contrast.

For a creative effect, candles can be angled slightly to spread shots across a wider area of sky rather than firing straight up. They are also one of the better choices for quieter displays, as many Roman candles produce softer effects with less bang than cakes or rockets. Check individual product noise ratings before buying.

Roman candle safety

Roman candles sold in the UK must never be held in the hand. All consumer Roman candles must be staked upright into the ground, placed in a bucket of sand or secured in a purpose-built holder before lighting. Ensure the tube is pointing directly skyward with nothing overhead before you light the fuse. Light at arm's length and retire to a safe distance immediately.

Most Roman candles are Category F2 with a minimum safety distance of 8 metres, though larger candle batteries may require more. Always check the label on each individual product before setting up. Stars and comets fired from Roman candles can travel significant distances - ensure your firing area is clear of people, garden furniture and anything that could catch light from a spent effect.

A Roman candle is a traditional firework consisting of a single tube loaded with multiple shots stacked vertically inside. Each shot fires one at a time in sequence, launching coloured stars, comets or crackling effects into the sky with a brief pause between each one. That measured, paced rhythm is what makes Roman candles distinct from cakes and barrages, which fire rapid sequences from multiple tubes simultaneously.

A single-tube Roman candle typically fires 5 to 10 shots in a sequence, one at a time from a single tube. A candle battery groups multiple tubes together with internal fusing, firing each tube in turn to produce a longer-running, higher shot count display - often 50 to 200 or more shots from a single ignition. Candle batteries offer more sustained visual impact while keeping the characteristic paced rhythm of a Roman candle.

Yes, and this is one of the most popular creative techniques with Roman candles. Angling candles slightly outward spreads shots across a wider area of sky rather than firing straight up, creating a fan effect that can look particularly impressive when multiple candles are angled in opposite directions. Always ensure your angled firing line is clear of spectators, structures and anything flammable before lighting.

The key difference is rhythm and structure. Roman candles stack shots vertically in a single tube, firing one at a time with a pause between each. Cakes and barrages use multiple separate tubes each with a single shot, firing rapidly in quick succession for a more intense, busier effect. Neither is better than the other - they serve different roles, and the best displays use both together for contrast and variety.

No. Roman candles must never be held in the hand.

All consumer Roman candles in the UK must be staked into the ground, placed in a bucket of sand or secured in a purpose-built holder before lighting. Holding a Roman candle is extremely dangerous and illegal under UK fireworks regulations. Always secure the candle upright, light the fuse at arm's length and retire immediately to a safe distance.
