Low noise fountains and Catherine wheels - the quietest fireworks in our range

Ground-based colour and movement with virtually no bang - perfect for opening a quiet display or using where noise is a real concern

Fountains and Catherine wheels are the two quietest firework types available. Neither requires an aerial launch charge, so there is no thump, no crack and no explosive report - just the gentle crackle, whoosh and rush of sparks that the firework itself produces. They are the closest the consumer firework range comes to genuinely near-silent, making them the natural choice for the most noise-sensitive situations.

Fountains project showers of sparks, coloured stars and crackling effects from the ground up to five metres or more, while Catherine wheels spin on a mounted nail producing a swirling disc of gold, silver and coloured flame. Both add variety, visual interest and sustained colour to any display without contributing any meaningful noise - ideal as openers, gap fillers or the centrepiece of a display where keeping quiet really matters.

Fountains | the quietest firework type

Fountains sit on the ground and project a shower of sparks upward, producing nothing more than a gentle hiss, crackle or whoosh. No aerial launch, no bang, just colour and light from ground level up to five metres or more. They are the perfect opener for any quiet display, warming up the audience with colour before any aerial fireworks begin.

Effects include silver and gold sparks, coloured stars, strobes and crackling finishes. Duration ranges from around 30 seconds for smaller models up to 100 seconds for larger fountains. The quietest fountains, pure strobes and colour fountains - produce almost no sound at all.

Catherine wheels - spinning colour without the bang

Catherine wheels are naturally low noise, they contain no bang charge, so the only sound produced is the whoosh and rush of spinning sparks. Mounted on a nail in an upright post, the wheel spins as it burns, producing a swirling disc of gold, silver and coloured flame that lasts around 30 to 50 seconds. Some wheels may crackle or whistle as they spin, check individual product descriptions if you want to avoid those sounds entirely.

Catherine wheels add motion and variety to a display in a way no other firework type can. They work brilliantly mid-display alongside fountains, giving the audience something visually different between aerial sequences without any additional noise.

Fountain and Catherine wheel safety

Fountains must be placed on flat, stable ground before lighting. Ensure the fountain is on an even surface and cannot tip, a tipped fountain projects sparks sideways rather than upward, which is dangerous. Place fountains well away from dry grass, garden furniture and anything flammable. Light the fuse at arm's length and retire to the minimum safety distance immediately.

Catherine wheels must be mounted on a smooth, upright wooden post using the nail provided before lighting. Check the wheel spins freely before lighting, a wheel that cannot rotate freely is a safety hazard. Mount at a comfortable height, roughly eye level for the best visual effect and easiest lighting. Ensure spectators are at the required safety distance and well clear of the wheel's spin path on all sides.

Low noise fountains & Catherine wheels - your questions answered

Because fountains are entirely ground-based and contain no aerial launch charge. Every aerial firework - cakes, rockets, candles - needs a lift charge to propel effects skyward, and that charge always produces a thump. Fountains have no lift charge at all. They simply burn upward from the ground, producing a gentle crackle, hiss or whoosh as sparks and effects travel upward. The quietest fountains, pure strobes and colour fountains produce almost no perceptible sound.

Yes. Catherine wheels contain no bang charge, so the sound produced is purely the whoosh and rush of spinning sparks rather than any explosive report. They are among the most naturally quiet fireworks available. That said, some wheels include crackling or whistling effects as part of their performance - check the individual product description before buying if you want to avoid those sounds entirely in a very quiet display.

Fountains are ideal as openers, warming up the audience with ground-level colour before any aerial fireworks begin, the gentlest possible introduction to a display. Catherine wheels work brilliantly mid-display, providing motion and visual variety between low noise cakes and candles. Both can also be used as gap fillers throughout the show to keep something happening on the ground while the next aerial piece is being lit.

Mount the wheel on a smooth, upright wooden post using the nail provided, at roughly eye level for the best visual effect. Before lighting, always check that the wheel spins freely - a wheel that cannot rotate will not perform correctly and may become a hazard. A small spray of WD-40 can help if the wheel feels stiff. Ensure spectators are at the required safety distance and well clear of the spin path on all sides before lighting.

Absolutely, in fact, they are at their best as part of a complete quiet display. Open with fountains for ground-level colour, use low noise cakes for the main aerial sequences, intersperse Catherine wheels for motion and variety, and close with a low noise display pack or compound barrage as your finale. Together, they give you a complete, varied and visually impressive show with the noise kept firmly in check throughout.
