Ice Fountains

Yes, provided the product is specifically labelled for indoor use. Ice fountains are Category F1 and formulated to produce cold sparks with minimal smoke, making them suitable for use in homes, restaurants, bars, hotels and event venues. They are fundamentally different from outdoor sparklers - never use outdoor sparklers or any standard firework indoors. Always check the product label confirms indoor suitability before use.

Outdoor sparklers burn at very high temperatures, produce significant smoke and leave a dangerously hot wire after use. Ice fountains produce cold sparks using titanium-based compounds, generate minimal smoke and are designed specifically for enclosed spaces. They also stand upright and self-supporting in a cake or holder, rather than being hand-held. For cakes and indoor celebrations, ice fountains are a significantly safer and more practical choice than outdoor sparklers.

Use a purpose-made ice fountain bottle holder, which clips securely to the neck of a champagne or wine bottle and provides a stable upright mounting point for the fountain. Without a holder, ice fountains can be taped to the neck of a bottle, though a proper holder is significantly more stable and reliable, particularly for moving presentations. Always ensure the fountain is pointing directly upward before lighting and keep the bottle still while it burns.

Dim the lights. This is the single most effective thing you can do to maximise the visual impact of an ice fountain. In a fully lit room, the spark shower is pretty. In a dimmed room, it is dramatic. Push the fountain firmly into the cake using the supplied pin so it cannot fall over, light the fuse and step back before it starts. Multiple fountains placed across the cake create a more impressive effect and give your photographer more to work with.

For a single birthday cake, two to four fountains spread across the top give a full, impressive effect. For a wedding cake or large celebration cake, four to six creates a genuinely dramatic presentation. For bottle service at a bar or venue, one per bottle is standard. Ice fountains are available individually, in small packs for home use and in bulk boxes for restaurants, bars and venues that use them regularly.
