Fireworks fit for a hero:

Saskia celebrates Olympic gold on Mersea Island

The Dynamic Fireworks team put on a stunning display to mark the return of Saskia Clark to her old sailing club on the weekend. The welcome home party concluded with a display featuring red, white and blue – and of course gold to create Fireworks fit for a hero.

Clark was welcomed back to the West Mersea Yacht Club, where friends and family – along with thousands of fans and the local mayor – came out to help her celebrate her Rio Olympic gold. The Mersea Island native bagged her very first Olympic gold on August 18 when she sailed to victory with her Welsh teammate Hannah Mills.

Family, friends and well-wishers gathered at the club where she honed the skills which would eventually win her the Women’s 470 category at Rio, following on from her silver medal at the London Olympics in 2012.

The Mayor of West Mersea Carl Powling, said of the 36-year-old: “Everyone is so proud of what she’s done, and we are looking in the long term of more of a permanent thing.

“We are quite proud to think that of the 27 gold medals that one is here in Mersea Island, and to have all the youngsters here it will bolster them.”

An overwhelmed Saskia said to those gathered, “I hope you are all a bit inspired by what you saw at the Olympics and how awesome Team GB was.

“This medal is not worth much unless you can come home with everyone to celebrate it.”

A Party to Remember

The street party held in Saskia’s honour went on well into the night, made more spectacular with the blistering fireworks display from Dynamics Fireworks. The team delivered a display worthy of one of our most treasured Olympic medallists. Truly Fireworks fit for a hero!

The show featured a dazzling mix of aerial shells, large barrage and roman candles, and lancework. Olympic rings were lit up in honour of the euphoric gold medallist, who at one stage was seen crowd surfing.

Fireworks were launched by a specially-prepared barge adjacent to Mersea Yacht Club in the Blackwater Estuary.

Thousands of Mersea Island locals along with people from across the region came out to help Saskia celebrate.

On the Anchorage Beach House Facebook page, people expressed their delight at proceedings.

Robin Watts posted: “Absolutely fantastic!! More evenings on Mersea like that please!!”

Lorraine Harrison commented: “Top, top night. I’m aching from all the dancing. I agree we need more nights like this. Incredible”

Photos of the event were also posted on the Secret Mersea Island Facebook page, along with some fantastic drone footage of the party and the fireworks, by DC Photography.
