Catherine wheels - the spinning firework that no other product can replicate

A hypnotic disc of colour, sparks and motion that adds a completely different dimension to any display

Catherine wheels are one of the oldest and most distinctive firework types available. Mounted on a nail in an upright post, the wheel spins as it burns, producing a glowing, whirling disc of sparks, colour and flame that starts slowly before building into a blur of motion. No cake, rocket or fountain produces anything like it - movement is the effect, and it is uniquely theirs.

Catherine wheels are well-suited to smaller gardens where bigger aerial fireworks are not practical, and work brilliantly as a mid-display contrast piece between aerial sequences - something close and spinning to change the pace and hold the audience's attention before the next cake fires. They contain no bang charge, so the sound is just the rush of spinning sparks, making most varieties naturally low noise.

Why Catherine wheels
are worth having

  • Motion is the effect - no other firework type spins
  • Works in small gardens where aerial fireworks need more space
  • Naturally low noise, no bang charge in standard versions
  • Brilliant as a mid-display contrast between aerial pieces
  • Effects range from simple gold sparks to multi-colour sequences
  • Duration of 30 seconds to over two minutes depending on size

How to mount a
Catherine wheel correctly

Correct mounting is the most important factor in a Catherine wheel working well. Use a dedicated wooden post, not a fence panel, shed or gate - if the wheel jams and burns through, you want it on something isolated. Mount the wheel towards the top of the post at roughly head height for the best visual effect and easiest lighting.

Bang the supplied nail through the centre hole into the post, then check the wheel spins freely before lighting. If it feels stiff, a small spray of WD-40 on the nail helps it rotate smoothly. A wheel that cannot spin freely will not perform correctly and may burn unevenly or jam. Never mount a Catherine wheel on a fence post or structure attached to your home.

Catherine wheel safety

Mount the wheel securely on a dedicated, isolated wooden post before lighting. Never mount on a fence attached to a garden boundary, a shed, a gate or any structure connected to a building - if the wheel jams, the burning drivers will ignite whatever they are attached to. Ensure spectators are at the required safety distance on all sides of the wheel, not just in front of it, as sparks are thrown outward in a circle.

Check the wheel spins freely before lighting. Light the fuse at arm's length using a portfire or long-handled lighter and retire to the safety distance immediately. Most Catherine wheels are Category F2 with an 8 metre safety distance - always check the product label. Keep the area around and below the post clear of dry grass and flammable material, as sparks will fall to the ground throughout the burn.

Catherine wheels - your questions answered

A Catherine wheel consists of a coiled tube or a series of powder-filled drivers mounted on a circular frame, attached to a central disc with a hole in the middle. When the fuse is lit, the burning powder ejects hot gases through small holes, propelling the frame into a spin. The wheel typically starts slowly before building into a fast, glowing blur of sparks and colour. Most wheels spin for 30 seconds to over two minutes depending on their size and number of drivers.

Almost always because the nail is too tight against the mounting hole, preventing the wheel from rotating freely. Check it spins freely before lighting - if it feels stiff, remove it, widen the mounting hole very slightly or add a small spray of WD-40 to the nail before remounting. Never force a stiff wheel or try to adjust it once lit. The wheel also needs to be mounted on a smooth surface rough wood can create friction that slows the spin.

Yes, and they are one of the best choices for smaller outdoor spaces. Most Catherine wheels are Category F2 with an 8 metre safety distance, making them suitable for the vast majority of gardens. They add motion and visual drama without needing significant overhead or lateral clearance, unlike rockets or large cakes. They work particularly well alongside fountains and Roman candles in smaller displays where aerial fireworks are limited.

Most are. Catherine wheels contain no bang charge, so the sound is purely the whoosh and rush of spinning sparks rather than any explosive report. They are among the more naturally quiet firework types. However, some wheels include crackling or whistling effects as part of their performance, which can be noticeably louder - check the individual product description before buying if you need to avoid those sounds. Browse our low noise Catherine wheels for the quietest options.

Mid-display works best. Catherine wheels provide a natural pause and contrast between aerial sequences - something close, spinning and ground-level to change the pace while the audience watches before the next cake fires. They can also work well as a display opener alongside fountains, building atmosphere before the first aerial fireworks. They are less effective as a finale, where higher-impact aerial pieces or a compound barrage will always make a stronger closing impression.
